SUPPORT SIMON TO PROGRESS

SimonsAble  - started four years ago, Simon’s business focus is on enabling people with physical disabilities to have their own identity and independence. Supplying expert advice on available services and providing moral support, his business has two main strands: working with people who have physical disabilities to build their self-confidence to enable them think about achieving whatever they choose to do in life, and, working with people without disabilities including families of children with disabilities, to feel comfortable about interacting with those who have disabilities.

Simon Wilson – achieved going to college and to university where he obtained a Social Psychology BA Honors degree, Simon has a disability called Cerebral Palsy and this includes no speech ability. This means he has to do things slightly differently to other people, for example “I use my head to manipulate my computer because I cannot control my hands.” He has an on screen keyboard which has enabled him to undertake many achievements in his life, however his typing speed using this facility is slow and this has always frustrated him.

Tobii – was a turning point when about 10 months ago Simon was shown a new communication aid which operates on an eye gaze system i.e. “if I look at something on the screen it selects this. I operate the computer with my eyes.” He had seen nothing like this communication aid before and took the incredible Tobii on trial for 2 weeks - 7  months later had obtained one of his own. “ It has given me my own words.  Even though I had previously used an alphabet letter board to form words to communicate, I had to have to rely on a person to assist me.  With Tobii, however, I can communicate with whoever I like and say what I like completely independently.  It has given me the ability to communicate freely by myself and my communication speed has seen a great improvement.”

Tobii 'Bolt-On' – to seriously speed up his work, Simon has recognised this will be achieved by having the same eye gaze facility fixed onto his desk top computer which he uses nearly all day, every day. “I know how much this would be worth to me but this piece of equipment is not cheap. I am thereforeorganising a series of events throughout the next 12 months to raise money to obtain this amazing piece of kit".  My target is £6000 and any excess money raised I will be donating to the Stars Foundation for Cerebral Palsy who sponsored my Tobii Communicator.
