Research

For around three years I have been researching non-disabled people's attitudes to people with physical disabilities having loving, sexual relationships. In care homes, because the care staff would have to assist the residents, I think the staff avoid such an event occurring. This might also be the same for most other people who work in the disability field.

A large amount of the general public are not in a relationship with people with disabilities and I believe this is to do with a lack of education. I would be very interested to hear from people who are connected with disability and from people who have little or no contact with people with disabilities about their relationship experiences or thoughts.

Secondly, I have an interest in communication and how people without speech can get their message across effectively. I think one of the issues is their confidence in how well others can understand them. I believe it is necessary to encourage children with communication difficulties to ensure they feel inspired to achieve. Also, if their teachers and support teams push them to do just a little bit more, this will enhance their  development. This is why I like working with young people.

Thirdly, I ask the question, can someone with a physical disability and without speech really live independently. I am talking about whether their families, friends, support workers, etc, will allow them to be individuals instead of just going along with what they say. If this happens, why is it the case and shouldn’t we look at people as individuals and not as people with disabilities.
